Jason Vargas Throws Mets Second Complete-Game Shutout

Last night, Jason Vargas did something that probably most fans would never believe. Vargas threw a complete-game shutout. He went all nine innings allowing no runs, five hits, one walk, and struck out eight. His ERA now stands at 3.57, which is currently the second-best ERA on the Mets staff. The rubber-game of this series will showcase Zack Wheeler (5-3 with a 4.68 ERA) against Shaun Anderson (1-1 with a 4.09 ERA).

Game Recap

Robinson Canó got the scoring started with an RBI groundout. In the bottom of the fourth, Michael Conforto added his eleventh homer of the year. A few batters later, Amed Rosario launched a three-run homer; his seventh of the year. In the next inning, Conforto added to the Mets lead with a sac-fly. Adeiny Hechavarria later clobbered his fourth homer of the year, making it 7-0 Mets in the seventh.

For the Giants, they struggled to get anything going against Vargas. Joe Panik led off the game with a double, and that was the only time the Giants had a runner past first base. On the mound, Tyler Beede got the start for the Giants. He went five innings allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits with five strikeouts.

Emergence Of Jason Vargas

Of all of the Mets starters to throw a complete-game shutout, Vargas was probably at the bottom of every list. Last night, he put the haters to rest. It took just 117 pitches for Vargas to throw his first complete-game in two years. This marks the 11th complete-game of his career, and eighth that was a shutout. He will look to continue his hot stretch as he is lined-up to start the first game of the Subway Series at Yankee Stadium.
