Four Takeaways From Mets Tough Loss To The Dodgers

Though Edwin Díaz blew a three-run lead, there were some positives in the Mets 9-8 to the Dodgers last night. Before we go there, Noah Syndergaard got the start for the Mets. Thor pitched six innings allowing three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. His ERA on the year now stands at 4.90. Walker Buehler got the nod for L.A. He went just five innings allowing five runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. The final game of the series will take place tonight and feature Jason Vargas (1-2 with a 5.22 ERA) against Hyun-Jin Ryu (7-1 with a 1.65 ERA).

Pete Alonso Homers Twice

One constant so far this season has been Pete Alonso’s power; which was on display again last night. Alonso crushed two more homers to give him 19 on the year (which is third in all of baseball). His power may have been a surprise to some people. Alonso hit nine homers in April and now has ten in May. Pete continues to prove his case for not only his first career All-Star Game but also a shot in the Home Run Derby.

Dom Smith Continues To Produce

Another positive from last night’s game was that Dom Smith continues to produce offensively. On the year, Dom is slashing .370/.469/.556 with two homers, seven RBIs, and 16 runs scored. After mostly coming off the bench, Smith has proved he deserves to be in the lineup more often. When McNeil returns, it seems as though he (McNeil) will move to center to keep Smith’s bat in the lineup.

Syndergaard Fights Through Six Solid Innings

After what has been a down year for Thor, Syndergaard came through with a solid start last night. He did not have his best stuff, however, Thor fought through six tough innings with 116 pitches. His next start will be back at Citi Field against the Giants. Against the Giants in his career, Syndergaard has dominated their current lineup. They are slashing .188/.235/.188 with no homers and four RBIs. This would be the perfect opportunity for Syndergaard to get his season back on track.

Díaz Has “Worst Night Of His Career”

Díaz simply did not have it last night. He was given a three-run lead and eventually gave it up by allowing two homers, an RBI double, and a sac fly. However, fans should not be worried. Yeah, it was tough to watch, but Díaz has been great all year and was bound to have at least one bad outing, it happens to every reliever at some point in the year. He called it “the worst night of his career”, but the next time Díaz gets the ball, you count on him having his best stuff working.
