Thank You Xavi! The Cule Captain Retires

Thank you Xavi probably isn’t enough for one of Barcelona’s greatest captains. However, the former Barcelona captain has announced his retirement from football after 21 years.

In an open letter on Thursday, Xavi announced this will be his last season. The Catalan currently plays in Qatar in Al Sadd.

“It has been a privilege to play football up to age 39 and I would like to finish out the season on the top by winning the Amir Cup and reaching the next stage of the Asian Champions League.

“This is my last season as a player, but I really want to see what the future holds for me as a manager.”

While with Barcelona, Xaxi played 769 times before making a move to Qatar in 2015. He won eight La Liga titles, three Copa del Rey and four Champions League. He was also nominated several times to the Ballon d’Or, once reaching the final three. He was also a World Cup winner in South Africa 2010 and a two-time European Cup winner with Spain.

“My philosophy as a coach reflects the style we developed for many years under the influence of Johan Cruyff and La Masia, and that has its greatest exponent in the way of playing football in Barcelona I love seeing the teams take the initiative in the field, attack football and return to the essence of what we all love since our childhood days: football possession.”

Xavi is a legendary emblem of Barcelona’s style of play. Something he feels goes hand-and-hand with Barcelona. He’s always defended the style of play versus winning at all cost.
