Pedro Morales, former WWF Champion, Passes Away at Age 76

More sad news today in the WWE. Former WWWF World Champion, Pedro Morales, passes away this previous Tuesday. The family says he had been battling Parkinson’s disease for several years.

The Legend

Pedro is WWE’s first ever “Triple Crown” Champion. He captured the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship, the WWF Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship, and the WWF Tag Team Championship throughout his career. Morales is officially a part of the WWE Hall of Fame as of 1995. He, of course, is the fourth man to ever be crowned WWWF/WWF/WWE Champion.

Morales retired from in-ring action in 1987. He continued to work in the wrestling industry as a Spanish-language commentator for both WCW and WWE.

Morales made a few wrestling appearances after his WCW days. He appeared at Wrestling Reunion 3 in 2005 and Wrestling Reunion 5 in 2007. Despite living a low profile life following his retirement, he has been the inspiration for homages and mentions throughout the years.

Morales is a self-proclaimed “old school” wrestler. He was not interested in the overselling of gimmicks and spectacle that is seen in modern professional wrestling.

Modern fan reaction is also positive in regards to the historical significance of Pedro’s accomplishments. Bleacher Report considers Morales the best Intercontinental champion of all time. Amateur writers for the same site also consider him the 31st best WWE wrestler in history. And also 11th greatest WWE Champion respectively.

As a trainer, Morales was involved in the training of Dory Funk Jr, who is a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion.

In this time, we give the Morales family our condolences. May Pedro Morales rest in peace and his legacy continues for decades to come.
