Ozil and Emery Feud Hits New Low

Mesut Ozil tweeted out a picture of him working out in the Arsenal fitness room. He appeared to take a dig at Arsenal boss, Unai Emery, by mentioning how his putting in the work. Ozil was recently left out of the away match against West Ham for tactical reasons. This is not the first time he has been healthy and not featured in the matchday squad. In fact, the German World Cup winner has only played in 13 of the 22 Premier League matches this season.

Stay or Go?

It has been reported that Unai Emery wants to sell Ozil this month to free up money to be spent in the transfer market. The 29-year-old is currently on a salary of 300,000 pounds per week.  From the standpoint of the club, if your biggest superstar does not get along with the manager, he should be sold. Emery seems reluctant to play him even when healthy. It would not be wise to pay a player 150,000 pounds a week for him to not play. The fact that he is making double that makes this an easy option. The issue here is who is a potential suitor? He is not an attractive January signing on a wage like that.

From a fan’s standpoint, this is incredibly frustrating. It is not like the Arsenal team is performing well without him. Losing to West Ham means that the Gunners have only won twice in their last six matches played. Ozil may not be the answer to the team’s current struggles, but they are lacking creativity. It does not make sense to not have him in the squad.

Bad Business

Arsenal have become known for bad business as of late. Selling Ozil would have been a better move for the club before they extended his deal. The same is true with Alexis Sanchez. Although Arsenal got Henrikh Mkhitaryan out of the swap, he has not lived up to expectations. Arsenal are paying out over half a million pounds every week for two aging playmakers.

Verdict

Selling Ozil now is the best solution to the problem that the club has created for itself. Ideally, they should’ve accepted a bigger fee when he had one year left on his original deal. Even letting him walk last summer for free would have been better. But you cannot change the past. They can only try to fix this problem. Move on from the German and start to rebuild the club. That is the best case scenario.
