David Wagner Leaves Huddersfield by Mutual Consent

David Wagner has left his position as Head Coach of Huddersfield Town after 3+ years on the job. Huddersfield sit at the bottom of the Premier League table with 11 points through 22 games.

The club has only picked up one point in its last nine matches leaving them destined for the Championship next season. Parting ways with Wagner is one way of preparing for that drop. Of course they will do their best to right the ship and stay up, but that seems highly unlikely. They are eight points away from safety.

Club Statement

“I’d like to begin by thanking David for all he has achieved at Huddersfield Town over the last three-and-a-half years. Under his stewardship, we’ve achieved things on the football pitch that surpass anything in modern memory, and that have gone well beyond my wildest expectations as Chairman and as a fan.

Under David’s management, we took this Club to the highest position it has held in almost 50 years and created memories that will last forever.”

From the statement made by the club, it really does feel like the term mutual consent applies to the situation. Wagner loved this club and brought them to new heights. He is expected to take a break from football until next season comes around. The former American International has had several clubs interested in the past so surely he will find a new home. He most famously turned down an offer from Wolfsburg while Huddersfield was still in the Championship. Wagner wanted to get them promoted and he reached that goal.

Replacement

Huddersfield Town has announced that the Under-23’s manager, Mark Hudson, will take charge of the next Premier League game against Manchester City. A tough task for your first match in charge of a senior squad. Hudson played for the Terriers from 2014 to 2017. He was a part of Wagner’s squad that was promoted in 2017, although he missed most of the season due to injury. It is unclear if Hudson will take charge for the remainder of the campaign.
