Kentucky Edges Penn State at Citrus Bowl

Kentucky edged Penn State football by a final score of 27-24. Kentucky had most of the momentum going into this entire game capitalizing on mistakes made by Penn State, overall through out the game.

Game Review

Kentucky edges Penn State, and during the game, there were two factors that contributed to Penn State ending up on the losing side. A missed 38-yard field goal early on and a late in the game interception by Trace McSorley. At one point, the Wildcats looked as if they would blow out Penn State when they had a 27-7 lead. However, the Nittany Lions managed to cut that deficit.

Penn State

In what is now officially Trace McSorley’s final game he managed to compile a great game with what was reported as a broke foot. McSorley went 17-33 for 246 passing yards and two touchdowns. As previously mentioned, McSorley threw a late game interception. The Wildcats defense managed to sack McSorley five times.

Rushing wise, the Nittany Lions were led by Trace McSorley and Miles Sanders. McSorley had 19 attempts for 104 yards and one touchdown. For Sanders,  he had 13 attempts for only 53 yards. The Citrus Bowl also was the last game for Sanders in a Penn State uniform as he has declared for the 2019 NFL Draft.

Receiving wise De’Andre Thompkins had four receptions for 74 yards. Likewise, tight end Pat Freiermuth had two receptions for 38 yards and one touchdown. Teammate Nick Bowers also had three receptions for 32 yards and the other touchdown.

Kentucky

The Wildcats came into this game with the mindset that they were here to prove that this season wasn’t a fluke.

Offensively, the Wildcats quarterback Terry Wilson went 9-15 for 121 yards. However, Wilson didn’t throw a single touchdown pass the entire game. Likewise, Wilson was sacked four times.

Rushing wise Benny Snell came to play. On 26 attempted rushes, Snell gained 144 yards along with two touchdowns on the game. Terry Wilson also had 10 rushes for 43 yards.

Receiving wise Lynn Bowden Jr. had five receptions for 84 yards. However, no touchdowns.

Conclusion

Penn State’s last bowl game loss came against the Trojans of USC in the Rose Bowl. Penn State finishes 9-4 and falls short of a 10 win season since getting back-to-back 10 win seasons the past two seasons.

Next up for the Nittany Lions is spring ball. James Franklin will take this upcoming spring season to evaluate the quarterback, running back and receivers positions as well as the performance of the defense.
