Urban Meyer Resigning After Rose Bowl. What’s next for Ohio State?

News that may have shocked the entire landscape of college football broke when Ohio State announced that Urban Meyer would step down as head coach following the Rose Bowl game. To some, the news is a bit shocking. To others, people expected it. Urban Meyer is resigning.

What’s next?

Ohio State will have a coaching vacancy but reports indicate that former interim coach Ryan Day will be offered a five-year contract. He will become the new head coach. Day coached the Buckeyes in the beginning part of the season when he filled in for Meyer who served a three-game suspension.

Career record at Ohio State

Since Meyer arrived in Columbus, he’s been nothing short of stellar. In seven seasons and excluding the Rose Bowl game this year, Meyer has a career record of 82 wins and nine loses. Meyer has also taken the Buckeyes to two Fiesta bowls where they’re 1-1,They lost the Orange Bowl in 2013, and won the Cotton Bowl last season and most notably in 2014, won the Sugar Bowl and the college football championship that year as well.

Recruiting

This is an area in which many people may think it will hurt them but don’t rush too fast. Currently, Ohio State has lost two commits in the class of 2020 due to the decision of Meyer retiring. Those two young men are four-star safety Lejond Cavazos and more notably four-star offensive tackle Jake Wray, who happens to be the 56th-ranked player in the class of 2020 and will still consider the Buckeyes due to his brother, Max Wray who is currently a freshman offensive lineman for the Buckeyes.

On the other hand, Urban Meyer has done a great job recruiting as a whole at the helm of Ohio State football. In 2012, the recruiting class stood at No. 5 in the country. In 2013, it  jumped to No. 2 in the country. In 2014, it went back down the No. 3 and in 2015, it took a dive to No. 7 in the country. Furthermore, in 2016, in jumped back up to No. 4 and in 2017, and jumped back to No. 2 in the country. Most recently in 2018, the recruiting class stood at No. 2 in the country. Since arriving at Ohio State in 2012, Urban Meyer has pulled in the top recruiting class in the Big Ten every year per 24/7 sports.

Ryan Day

The Buckeyes’ new head coach is very familiar with the game of college football and played college football at the University of New Hampshire. Day played college football under Chip Kelly when Kelly was offensive coordinator at New Hampshire. Day has also coached five different FBS programs including New Hampshire, Boston College (two stints), Florida (he worked under Urban Meyer there), and Temple.
