Manchester United’s Woes Linger

One thing an athlete will never take kindly to is questioning their heart. However, that is exactly what Jose Mourinho thought he needed to do for his team. A poor display last week leading to a draw against Crystal Palace had Mourinho looking at the build of his team. Midweek, United managed to squeak out a Champions League victory against Young Boys after a subpar performance. A stoppage time goal from unlikely hero Marouane Fellaini punched the red devil’s ticket into the next round. United look to reset and get back on pace to obtaining one of the top 4 champions league spots that are slowly slipping away.

Saints Level With The Devils

Southampton have not beat Manchester United at home since August of 2003. McCarthy mishap clearance almost had the home team down early. Southampton would grab the lead in the 12th minute when Armstrong fires a shot in the bottom corner of the net after a quality stint of possession. With injuries at the center back position, Manchester’s patchwork defense was exposed. The saints take a 2-0 lead over Manchester after a brilliant free kick from Cedric Soares. The slow start was exactly the nightmare Jose Mourinho was trying to avoid. The red devils show some life with a goal from Lukaku 33 minutes in. The goal was his first since mid-September. United manage to get back on level terms with a cheeky back heel flick finish by Ander Herrera.

Same Manchester, Different Day

United battling back from a deficit seems to be the theme of this season. Throughout the second half, Southampton kept United’s midfield pinned in their own half. Pogba’s sloppy giveaways and numerous fouls disrupted link up plays with their attackers. Martial was introduced halfway through to try to add a dynamic burst in the final third, which had been lacking all match. As the match wrapped up, Southampton were continuously on the front foot and looked more threatening. United would have to settle for another draw dropping points once again.

Search For Stability

Things will not get any easier for the devils as they welcome Arsenal to Old Trafford.  Arsenal are in good form but will be coming off a battle with Tottenham tomorrow. A win against the gunners will close the gap on a top four spot for United. United are currently 16 points off the title leaders Manchester City. The constant change of lineups and inconsistent play by stars has disrupted their campaign this year. Pogba, who lost his captaincy earlier in the year, seems to have also lost his confidence. Lukaku’s goal was an unseen benefit for today due to the Belgians recent injury spell of late. Manchester United are winless in their last three Premier League matches and are stuck in seventh place. If the 20 time league champions want to continue to fight for another Premier League title to their club, they will need to find continuity soon.
