NHL

The Panthers Take Down the Islanders for Their Third Straight Win This Season.

The Panthers extended their first winning streak of the season to three games with a 4-2 win over the Islanders on Saturday. The game involved Mike Hoffman and Evgenii Dadonov extending their point streaks (11 for Hoffman, 10 for Dadonov). It is the first time in Florida Panthers franchise history that two players have point streaks beyond 10 games. Additionally, captain Aleksander Barkov found the back of the net for the game-winner.

Roberto Luongo made 29 of 31 possible saves for his third straight win after coming back from injury

Robin Lehner made 27 saves.

Additionally, there was a pregame ceremony to honor the late Bill Torrey, who owned both the Panthers and the Islanders during his time as a hockey owner.

Game Summary

1st period

Goal: FLA 1-0 FLA

Denis Malgin would find the back of the net for his first of the season. Malgin would be parked in front of Lehner’s crease and fire home a feed from Jared McCann. This extends Bjugstad’s point streak to four games. In addition, the goal was assisted by Nick Bjugstad. Time of the goal was 6:18.

Goal: NYI 1-1

Matthew Barzal would notch his second of the season during his 100th career NHL game. After a costly turnover by Mike Matheson, Anders Lee would feed Barzal and take off on a breakaway. He went forehand, backhand, then top shelf past Luongo. Time of the goal was 7:28.

Shots on goal were 13-6 in favor of New York.

2nd Period

Goal: NYI 2-1 NYI

Brock Nelson would give the Islanders their first and only lead of the night with his eighth goal on the year. After a failed cleared attempt that was gathered by Scott Mayfield, he would feed the puck to Nelson. After a nice toe drag to lose Keith Yandle, Nelson would rip it short side past Luongo. Additionally, the goal was assisted by Tom Kuhnhackl. Time of the goal was 8:10.

Goal: FLA 2-2

Mike Hoffman would extend his point streak to 11 games with his seventh goal of the season. Matheson would blast one from the point that bounced wide of the net. Hoffman would grab the puck and force it in front of the net. Unfortunately, it bounced off of Ryan Pulock’s skate and in between the legs of Lehner. Additionally, the goal was assisted by Evgenii Dadonov, extending his point streak to 10 games. Time of the goal was 19:14.

Shots on goal were 26-20 in favor of New York.

3rd Period

Goal: FLA 3-2 FLA

Aleksander Barkov would score the difference maker on the power play. Yandle would feed Barkov from the point and he would drag it and fire one past Lehner from the bottom of the circle. Time of the goal was 4:43.

Goal FLA 4-2 FLA

Troy Brouwer would put this game on ice (no pun intended) with an empty net goal. Johnathan Huberdeau would bank the puck off of the boards to find Brouwer who would simply dish it to the empty net. Time of the goal was 19:59.

Final shots on goal were 31 a piece.
