Clemson Smothers BC 27-7

No. 2 Clemson defeated no. 17 Boston College 27-7 on Saturday night to improve to 10-0 on the season. Clemson clinches the ACC Atlantic division for the fourth straight year and has defeated Boston College eight times in a row.

Clemson Review

Trevor Lawrence was 29-40 with 295 yards passing and two total touchdowns (one rushing and one passing). Travis Etienne finished with 78 yards rushing on 11 carries. Hunter Renfrow led the receivers with eight catches for 80 yards. Offensively, Clemson managed 424 yards of total offense and dominated the time of possession. On defense, Clemson smothered the Boston College running game (nine yards rushing) and the Eagles saw little success in the air (104 yards passing). Clemson’s defense continues to be dominant against the rush and there was nothing Boston College could do to sustain offensive drives.

Boston College Review

Boston College had a good night on defense slowing the Tigers offense down but could not capitalize on offense. The Eagles suffered a bad break in the first quarter when starting QB Anthony Brown went down. Boston College turned to EJ Perry who went 12-21 passing and 96 yards through the air. AJ Dillion rushed for 39 yards on 16 carries. Kobay White led the receivers with 4 catches for 65 yards. On defense, Zach Allen made his presence felt most of the night by dominating Clemson’s right tackle. The Boston College defense confused Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence early on with disguised blitzes, but couldn’t keep the Tiger offense from scoring.

Overall Thoughts

Boston College played a good game on defense. I am not sure how different the game would have been had their QB, Anthony Brown, not been knocked out of the game in the first quarter. Clemson’s defense contained AJ Dillion and Brown would have had to have a career night to make much of a difference in this game. Trevor Lawrence played well but did have times when he looked like a freshman QB. Teams continue to challenge Lawrence to beat them with his arm and he has answered the challenge each time.

Next Week, Clemson returns home to host Duke for Military Appreciation Day and Boston College travels to Tallahassee to take on Florida State.
