Gremio vs River Plate Preview

Current Copa Libertadores champions Gremio went into Buenos Aires and snacked three points away from River Plate.

Gremio’s 0-1 win at Monumental stadium sets them well as they will close the fixture at the Arena do Gremio.

Meanwhile, River Plate boss Marcelo Gallardo seeks to conquer Porto Alegre with fireworks to once again reach the finals. Back in 2017, Gallardo found himself in the same situation having lost at home against Brazilian giants Cruzeiro.

Nevertheless, the reigning champions remain heavy favorites not only defeat River but to win it all.

Team News

Unfortunately, River Plate wil be without their manager Gallardo on the sidelines. Gallardo receives a one-match ban for his side’s late re-entry to the pitch after halftime.

Additionally, the club will pay a $20,000 fine while Gallardo pays another fine costing him $1,500.

Matias Biscay is set to take the duties at Porto Alegre with Gallardo watching from the crow.

However, River have doubts with Juan Fernando Quintero. It is likely that his poor form last week will keep him on the bench to start the match.

Meanwhile, coach Renato Portaluppi will have to fine a replacement for Walter Kannemann. The Argentinian will be pay suspension against River.

Additionally, talisman Luan is unlikely to recover in time.  However, striker Everton is set to return.

Possible Lineups

Gremio Starting XI: Grohe; Leonardo, Geromel, Oliverira, Cortez; Maicon, Cicero, Ramiro, Alisson, Pepe; Jael.

River Plate Starting XI: Armani; Montiel, Maidana, Pinola, Casco; Fernandez, Palacios, Ponzio, Pity Martinez; Borre, Scocco.

Where To Watch

The game will be available on Fox Deportes at 8:45 PM ET.

Prediction

Gremio is aiming at becoming the first team since Boca Juniors in 2000 and 2001 to win the competition is successive years.

Meanwhile, River’s strong defense has only conceded two goals in their past eight matches in this competition.

A one goal lead is not sufficient for Gremio and will have to score several more goals in order to keep River down.
