Red Wings Finally Grab Their First Win of the Season in Overtime 4-3.

The Red Wings finally got their first win of the season. However, it took a comeback, extra time, and some grit. Gustav Nyquist was the hero for the city of Detroit, Michigan on this night.

Micahel Hutchinson made 27 saves on 31 shots, showing that he is a strong young goalie.

Jimmy Howard made 34 saves.

Game Summary

1st Period

Goal: FLA 1-0 FLA

Keith Yandle would open up the scoring for this match up. Evgenii Dadonov would rush in with Yandle on a two-on-two rush. Dadonov would dish Yandle the puck and fire it at the top of the left wing, beating Howard. As a result, this would be Yandle’s first goal of the season. Additionally, the goal was assisted by Nick Bjugstad.

Goal: FLA 2-0 FLA

Nick Bjugstad would extend the lead for Florida with a quick shot right after the face off win from Barkov. Bjugstad would beat Howard short side.

Shots on goal were 13-12 in favor of Detroit.

2nd Period

Goal: DET 2-1 FLA

Detroit would finally get on the board during a 5-on-3 man advantage. After a faceoff win by Frans Nielsen, Denis Cholowski would take the puck from Andreas Athanasiou and rip it past Hutchinson. He never saw the shot due to him being screened by Michal Rasumssen. It happened seven seconds after the faceoff.

Goal: DET 2-2

The former Florida Panther would get on the board this time around. Thomas Vanek would tee up a feed from Nielsen and blast it home on the power play during a rush. The goal was also assisted by Cholowski.

Goal: DET 3-2 DET

Detroit would finally get the lead thanks to their top line center, Dylan Larkin. Larkin would pass the puck to Darren Helm. In response, Helm would return the puck to Larkin near the crease and he would shoot it past Hutchinson. The goal was also asssited by Nyquist.

Florida would get multiple chances to score in this period such as three straight power play opportunities and a penalty shot from Aleksander Barkov. However, Florida failed to capitalize on all three man advantages and the puck just slipped away from Barkov as he was attempting his shot.

Shots on goal were 23-22 in favor of Detroit.

3rd Period

It seemed like the Cats were desperate to tie this game up. But that tie finally occurred in the late stages of the third.

Goal: FLA 3-3

Mike Hoffman would be the Panthers third period hero and get this game tied late. Yandle fake a shot that shifted the entire defense and Hoffman made a straight line passed the blue line. Yandle passed the puck to Hoffman. As he tried to wheel his way in, he knuckle-balled the shot that bounced off of Howard’s blocker and into the net. The goal was assisted by Barkov.

Shots on goal were 35-28 in favor of Florida.

Overtime

Goal: DET 4-3 DET

Nyquist would be the hero to give the Red Wings their first win of the season. Larkin would pick Yandle’s pocket and give a short pass to Nyquist who would go on a breakaway. Nyquist would rip it blocker side for the game winner and his first of the season.

The Road Ahead

Detroit

The Red Wings will go home to the motor city to take on the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday, October 22nd at 7:30 pm.

Florida

The Panthers will fly into the city that never sleeps to take on the New York Rangers on Tuesday, October 23rd at 7:00 pm.
