New York Mets Make Syracuse New Triple-A Home

Earlier today, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a name change to the Syracuse Chiefs. The Chiefs will now be known as the Syracuse Mets. Earlier in 2018, the Mets purchased a contract deal with Syracuse to move their Triple-A team from Las Vegas up to Syracuse, New York. Formally with Syracuse was the Mets division-rival Washington Nationals. They have moved their new Triple-A team to Fresno. Syracuse has been referred to as the “Chiefs” since the team was established in 1934. Now, the team will be the “Mets” with an updated ballpark, merchandise, and brand new players coming this spring. The contract with the New York Mets is expected to last through 2043.

Why This Move Makes Sense?

Prior to the move to Syracuse, the Mets Triple-A home was all the way in Las Vegas, Nevada. This was a huge inconvenience due for a few reasons. One reason was due to player injury. If any Met were to get hurt, it would take longer to get a call-up from Vegas all the way to New York City, especially if they make the move relatively quick. Another reason is fairly obvious. Why would a New York baseball team have their Triple-A team all the way in Las Vegas? Logically, it only makes sense for the Mets to make this move. It is more convenient for the team, the players, and the fans. With most Mets fans being in New York, it’s best for everyone that their future stars also be in New York.

Before Syracuse and Las Vegas, the Mets Triple-A team was located in Buffalo, New York. They moved to Vegas in 2012 after being with the Bisons beginning 2008. Though it may seem like a small note, the Mets moving their Triple-A team closer to Citi Field will prove to be worthwhile.
