Brewers Bullpen Struggles in Game 2 Loss to Dodgers

The Brewers suffered a tough loss to the Dodgers in Game 2 of the NLCS. After leading 3-0 into the seventh inning, the Brewers bullpen struggled to close the door. The Dodgers scored four unanswered runs to even the series at one game apiece. Wade Miley started for the Brewers. Miley pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings while also allowing two hits, zero walks, and three strikeouts. Another dominant postseason start from a guy who had one of the highest ERAs in baseball just a year ago. The Dodgers had lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu to the mound. Ryu went 4 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, two runs, and struck out four Brewers. The series will resume on Monday in Los Angeles for Game 3.

Game Recap

Game 2 was a pitcher’s duel until the Brewers broke through in the fifth inning off Ryu. Brewers shortstop Orlando Arcia got the scoring started with a solo homer to center field. Ryan Braun knocked in another run with an RBI groundout to make it 2-0 Brewers. In the bottom of the sixth, Travis Shaw added another run for the Brew Crew with a solo homer of his own. In the top of the seventh, the Dodgers finally broke through against the Brewers bullpen. The Dodgers scored two runs off Corbin Burnes with an RBI single from Cody Bellinger, and bases loaded walk with Austin Barnes at the plate. The Brewers were still up 3-2 going into the eighth inning. With Jeremy Jeffress now in the game, Chris Taylor led off with an infield single. The next batter for the Dodgers was third basemen, Justin Turner. On a 2-0 count, Turne launched a go-ahead homer to left field to give the Dodgers a 4-3 lead. Kenley Jansen came in to secure the Dodgers 4-3 win to even the series at one game apiece.

Greatest Strength or Greatest Weakness

The Brewers bullpen, thought to be one of their strongest assets, has turned into potentially one of their biggest foes. All but one run scored by opposing teams in the postseason have come from Milwaukee’s bullpen. As they head to Los Angeles for Game 3 of the series, the Brewers bullpen looks to get back on track against a clutch Dodgers lineup. Some keys names to pay attention too are rookie Corbin Burnes, veteran Jeremy Jeffress, and All-Stars Josh Hader and Corey Knebel.
