Manchester United vs Derby Review

Manchester United fall to defeat at hands of Lampard’s Derby

Championship minnows Derby, spearheaded by Premier League legend Frank Lampard have tonight left the Manchester United faithful with a bittersweet taste of defeat in their mouths. United have now failed to win at Old Trafford three times this season.

Lacklustre Reds

United came into this game off the back of a disappointing result in the league. Wolves held last seasons runners-up to a 1-1 draw. Before tonight’s game news had spread of Jose Mourinho stripping Paul Pogba of his vice-captain role, claiming he will,

“Never captain United again”.

The fiasco seemed to be put to bed 3 minutes into the game when veteran Juan Mata finished off a lovely United move, involving the lively Anthony Martial and the admittedly struggling Romelu Lukaku. Mata finished with a textbook left-footed finish. But United never pushed on from this goal. Additionally, shock rang around Old Trafford 59 minutes in when Liverpool boy Harry Wilson scored arguably the goal of the season so far.

Things went from excruciatingly bad, to terrifyingly worse for United. James Marriot made it 2-1 85 minutes in with the aid of VAR. Derby at the double.

But cometh the hour, cometh the afro, Marouane Fellaini. United’s best player of the last few games stepped up late on to salvage a penalty shootout for the Red Devil’s with his vintage headed goal.

Finally, Derby went on to win 7-8 on penalties, with Phil Jones missing the ultimate penalty.

Tears For Jose, Turmoil For Fans

Jose Mourinho’s post-match interview was bleak as expected. Additionally, the United boss was visibly animated but also cut a forlorn figure. Also, the Portuguese masterminds eyes were bloodshot red and somewhat dreary looking. Maybe he knows something the media don’t, has he been told it’s time to go? Mourinho stated in his post-match interview that he told his players,

“Their dressing room is a dressing room with belief”

That’s not something you’re accustomed to hearing with Championship teams coming to Old Trafford.

Elsewhere, United fan Andy Tate expressed his worries on well respected Youtube fan account Full Time Devils. Tate stated,

“There’s a virus at the club”.

Nonetheless, times are looking bleak at Man United, can they bounce back?
