Real Madrid vs AS Roma Preview

Last year’s champions begin their title defense at home against Roma on Wednesday. Both clubs are probably pleased to face their most difficult Group G opponents early on. Although, the Spanish club will enjoy home field advantage.

The hosts will be eager to bounce back after a disappointing draw with Athletic Bilbao on the weekend. Likewise, their Italian opponents have had a poor start to the season and a win against the current European champions would inject morale.

Team News

Real Madrid did their best to rest key players over the weekend, with Isco and Casemiro sitting on the bench until the second half. Additionally, Gareth Bale and Luka Modric were substituted earlier than usual after being in the starting eleven. Expect all four to be in coach Julen Lopetegui’s lineup on Wednesday. New signing Mariano Diaz could also finally make his season debut with the club.

‘The Giallorossi’ have scored in all their matches so far this season, albeit without a win. The forever-young Daniele De Rossi may partner Steven Nzonzi in midfield. The 35 year old captain was rested on the weekend’s draw with Chievo, coming on in the 70th minute. However, Lorenzo Pellegrini is more likely to get the start. Turkish winger Cengiz Ünder should start again alongside striker Edin Džeko.

Lineup and Match Prediction

Real Madrid: Courtois; Marcelo, Ramos, Varane, Carvajal; Modric, Casemiro, Kroos; Asensio, Benzema, Bale

Roma: Olsen; Florenzi, Manolas, Juan Jesus, Kolarov; Pellegrini, N’Zonzi, Cristante; Under, Dzeko, El Shaarawy

Whereas a win for the visiting club would surprise many, it is not impossible. Head coach Eusebio Di Francesco has the weapons to pull an upset in the Spanish capital. No one will need reminding of Barcelona’s elimination last season at the hands of the Italians.

Also, Real often struggle in the group stage. The thirteen-time champions make a habit of finishing second in their group before eventually lifting the trophy. Oddly, another slow start could be a good omen. Nevertheless, it is hard to predict anything but a Real Madrid win at home with Bale and Karim Benzema in good scoring form.
