Chris Sale Returns to Take on deGrom and the Mets

Chris Sale made his return from the disabled list today against the Mets and seemed back in full force. Sale pitched three shutout innings allowing one hit, and no runs while striking out one. On the other side, the Mets sent their Cy Young candidate Jacob deGrom to the mound. deGrom went seven innings, gave up 5 hits, three runs, one walk, and struck out twelve. deGrom’s ERA now stands at 1.78 on the season. Both starters have great chances to take home the Cy Young Award in their respective leagues. On the year, Chris Sale is 12-4 with a 1.92 ERA while deGrom is 8-9 with a 1.78 ERA. This was the first time since 1985 that both starters had a sub-2 ERA. Chris Sale looked strong in his return, and deGrom bolstered his chances to win the NL Cy Young. Do not be surprised if we see both of them recognized as baseball’s best pitchers.

Game Recap

The Red Sox got started offensively in the third inning. After a Mookie Betts sac fly, Brock Holt ripped a two-run homer to give Boston a quick 3-0 lead. The Mets answered back in the sixth inning. Wilmer Flores got the Mets going with a sac fly. Later in the inning, Michael Conforto doubled to deep center field making it 3-2 Red Sox. Once the seventh inning came around, Amed Rosario tied the game with an RBI single that scored Jay Bruce. Andrew Benintendi gave the Red Sox the lead in the bottom of the eighth with a sac fly. Steven Wright came in and shut the door to give Boston a 4-3 win. The win was number 103 for the Red Sox, who have already clinched at least a playoff spot. Their magic number for the division now stands at two. However, Mookie Betts left the game early with apparent soreness in his left side. The loss eliminated the Mets from winning the NL East division. They still have one game to play for a chance at a Wild Card spot. Though this won’t happen, the Mets are one game shy of their total win count from a year ago. All in all, the Red Sox took two out of the three total games in the series, and are moving closer to their third-straight AL East title. On the other side, the Mets are looking to finish strong and carry momentum into next season.
