Javier Baez-4, Washington Nationals-3 In 10 Inning Bonanza

In what was a very crucial game for the Cubs to win after dropping two of three to the Brewers. Mike Montgomery was set to take the mound for the Cubs. And for the Nationals Joe Ross was making his MLB debut. Ross didn’t do too bad giving up just two runs on four hits in five innings. The Nationals could have easily won this game 4-0 if it wasn’t for one man, Javier Baez. Going 3-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored in what was a ten-inning bonanza. Mike Montgomery got tagged early, the Cubs went down, but he was able to stay calm, relaxed and focused and kept the Cubs in the game. Going 4.0 IP giving up just three hits and two runs striking out two.

Mike Montgomery

Making his third start since coming back from the DL. Montgomery hasn’t been as reliable as he was before the DL stint, but can still get the job done. Giving up just two runs in the four innings he worked. However, in his last seven starts, Monty hasn’t even been able to go five innings. Averaging 4.1 IP a start in his previous seven starts. Holding an ERA of 4.25, Monty has been a solid fill-in for Darvish all season. However, at 111 IP is the workload catching up to him? By the time the season is over, Monty should have a new career high in IP.

Javier Baez Does It All For Cubs

Javier Baez has had a very strong case for MVP candidacy this year. And after last nights game, I have to believe that helped his chances just a little bit. Driving in three of four Cubs runs and scoring the fourth run. If it wasn’t for Javier Baez, the Cubs would have had no chance to win that game and would have lost a half game lead on Milwaukee. Another thing to mention, Javier Baez has already taken four walks this month. After taking a season-high seven in the previous month. Javier Baez has seemed more willing to take his walks, in fact in his last seven games. Javier Baez has an OBP of .370. If Javy can learn to take more walks and swing less, which in return would force pitchers to pitch to him. This kid could become a 40 home run a year type of guy. I mean hey, he’s already at 31. If he were to be more disciplined, 40 would be possible for Baez.
