The End of the Road for David Wright

Earlier today, Mets fans received news they did and did not want to hear. The Mets Captain sat at the table with Mets officials Jeff Wilpon and John Ricco announcing he will be activated on September 25th, and he will be playing in a final game on September 29th. Though Wright never explicitly said the word “retire”, all indications are showing that this will be David Wright’s final game. The last game of David Wright’s career is something Mets fans have been dreading ever since the beginning. David Wright has brought countless memories to Mets fans everywhere and fans cannot express their gratitude enough for him.

David Wright: The Player

By the numbers, David Wright is arguably the greatest Met of all-time. Wright currently is first in franchise history in hits, runs, RBIs, doubles, walks, and is second in home runs. He is also a seven-time All-Star, two-time Gold Glove Award, and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner. Wright’s contributions on the field were nothing sort of magical. There was the walk-off hit off Mariano Rivera, the home run against the Phillies in his return from the DL, the two-run single in the 2015 NLDS, and perhaps the greatest, the two-run home run in World Series Game 3. The memory of the entire 2015 season, when David Wright homered to put the “icing on the cake” for the division title, or even the final out at Wrigley when David Wright finally got what he always deserved: a trip to the World Series. Cooperstown is not out of the question for Wright.

Who is Captain America?

A Mets icon since day one, Wright has always put the fans first. He is a man that goes out of his way to interact with the fans. “To the fans, words can’t express my gratitude and appreciation for always having my back. You accepted me as one of your own, and that right there is a tremendous honor.” As injuries began to pile up, Mets fans always supported Wright getting back on the field. He worked countless hours in the weight room and on the field to get back to the team. Wright became a leader, an idol, and eventual hero to every Mets fan.

Final Thoughts

As we slowly approach September 29th, Mets fans will always carry memories of David Wright in their hearts. He was a guy that everyone could count on, everyone could look to if they were having a bad day, and a childhood hero to support throughout their lives. “Thank you” will never be enough for what David Wright has done for the Mets organization. David Wright will always be our third baseman, our captain, and our hero. David Wright will forever be a part of the Mets family.  Thank you for everything you’ve done for the Mets organization and everything you have done for Mets fans everywhere. We salute you, Captain!
