Clemson arrives in the matchup ranked #2 in the nation. Furman is ranked #23 in the FCS rankings. Both teams rock purple, so if you aren’t a fan of Prince or the color don’t come to this game. Furman wants to pull off the biggest shocker since the App State-Michigan over a decade ago. Do the Paladins stand a chance? Yes, exactly like Lloyd Christmas has a chance with Mary Swanson in Dumb and Dumber.
Furman Paladins
Furman is a sneaky FCS team that COULD surprise an FBS team on the right day. They run the “double wing” offense, which is essentially an option style offense. Teams that run the option punish sloppy teams. Furman needs Clemson to feel like this is a nooner against an FCS that is going to roll over and give the game away. If Furman gets that Clemson team then the opening day in the confines of Death Valley could be downright scary for the Tigers.
Fun fact: A Clemson student is in the running for starting QB for Furman.
Clemson Tigers
Clemson is a monster team ready to start the march to the College Football Playoffs. Last year, the defense was the strength of the team. This year, the team looks to be more balanced and even more talented on both sides of the ball. Hype aside, Clemson just needs to play assignment football with Furman. Clemson sees an option style team at least once a year against Georgia Tech, so the element of surprise will not be to Furman’s advantage.
Conclusion
Overall, Clemson is on a 30-game winning streak against Furman and this Saturday that streak will extend to 31. Simply put, Furman may come into Death Valley amped up, but Clemson will be the grown man in this matchup against the feisty teenager. Furman may score, but Clemson runs away with it due to superior talent alone.
