It seems that his possible retirement is due to an injury. According to Hardy, his lower spine is beginning to fuse together with his pelvis. This is, of course, because of his length career and high risk offense.

Even though his in-ring career is over, he could possibly be transitioning to a backstage role.

Shadowing Producers

In a recent video from Cultaholic about Matt Hardy’s new role, it was revealed that Hardy has been “shadowing” producers while on the road the last few weeks. Shadowing means watching and learning from someone to learn how their style about a certain job or skill. According to Cultaholic, this is Matt Hardy’s goal for the future once his in-ring career is over.

This isn’t unusual for former wrestlers to take on a producer role after they retire from in-ring competition. Joey Mercury, TJ Wilson (known in WWE as Tyson Kidd), Fit Finlay, and Jamie Noble have had successful transitions from in-ring talent to road agents and producers. TJ Wilson was the producer for the Gargano vs. Ciampa match at NXT TakeOver: Chicago 2. Jamie Noble was one of the producers for the Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 25.

Jason Jordan has also been shadowing producers in recent weeks. Which means his in-ring career could also be finished.

Matt Hardy’s career has been over 26 years and through several promotions, but mostly with WWE. He will be off television for the next several weeks to recover from his spinal injury. After his recovery, he will most likely announce his retirement and begin his new role in WWE as a producer.
