Dave Meltzer Insults SmackDown Superstar Peyton Royce

On a recent episode of the Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer had an interesting take on former NXT and current SmackDown Live female Superstar Peyton Royce.

Dave Meltzer is head writer and editor of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. On occasion, he hosts a podcast with fellow journalist Brian Alvarez. On the August ninth edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer and Alvarez were discussing the Mae Young Classic and the NXT women’s roster. While in discussion, Meltzer mentioned Peyton Royce, a recent NXT call up for SmackDown Live and one half of the tag team, “The IIconics.” Meltzer went to say that Royce’s act in NXT was better and made her stand out more than it currently does on the main roster. A fair statement, as many Superstars, both male and female, have lost the momentum they had while in NXT after making their transition to the main roster. Tyler Breeze, Apollo Crews, Sami Zayn, and Dana Brooke are just a few that have lost their NXT popularity and momentum.

However, Dave Meltzer was beginning to explain his opinion of Royce to “become more attractive” before being cut off by Alvarez.

“I think that Peyton Royce’s transformation to look more attractive… I dunno, I don’t wanna say it… It’s just…” -Dave Meltzer

“She was more attractive in NXT?” -Brian Alvarez

“I thought so. Yes. To me, yes. I’d say so.” -Dave Meltzer

Dave Meltzer then said that she stood out a lot more on NXT than she does on SmackDown Live. While Brian Alvarez began to give his take, Meltzer also said, “she was a lot lighter”, still referring to Royce and her time on NXT.

Superstars’ Take on the Issue

It is a possibility that this was taken out of context and was not Dave Meltzer’s true opinion. But that does not mean it wasn’t alarming to hear this kind of opinion come from someone like Dave Meltzer.
