Houston Rockets Get Verbal Commitment From Carmelo Anthony

On Tuesday, The Houston Rockets received a verbal agreement from Carmelo Anthony. As reported yesterday via Twitter, Anthony is currently in Africa. Upon his return, he will then officially sign and be a member of the Rockets organization. The Oklahoma City Thunder traded him to the Atlanta Hawks a few weeks ago.

The Hawks waived Anthony, which made him an unrestricted free agent. Sources throughout the league had long expected this decision. The Rockets really ramped up their pursuit of Anthony after the departures of Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah Moute, who went to the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Clippers respectively.

Carmelo Anthony Joins Harden And Company

Anthony will be joining James Harden, Chris Paul, and Clint Capela. Head Coach of the Rockets Mike D’Antoni will more than likely utilize Anthony in the starting lineup. As a scoring forward, Anthony will get plenty of open looks. Along with Hardens and Pauls driving and passing abilities, he must be willing to be a spot shooter to help the Rockets offense flow.

This is an opportunity for the Rockets to come back stronger if Anthony plays ball per D’Antoni’s system. They’ve have proven they’re in contention in a strong Western Conference. Anthony has to accept the role that is given to him.

Seemingly, Anthony at 34 years of age is likely past his prime. His role as part of the Thunder’s big three did not end well. He averaged 16.2 points on 40.4 shooting, He shot 76.7% from the free throw line and averaged 1.3 assists per game. He averaged 5.8 rebounds per game, which was his lowest since 2005-06.

Will Anthony be willing to play the role needed for the Rockets? The favored assumption is Anthony will take his role seriously and will provide the help, Paul, and Harden need to get past the Golden State Warriors. Anthony doesn’t make the Rockets stronger, but he will add to a strong star-filled roster.
