Ray Emery Dies; Sending Grief Throughout the Hockey Community

Earlier today, an unidentified man drowned at the Hamilton Harbor in Ontario, Canada. Photojournalist Andrew Collins reported that the victim was former NHL goalie, Ray Emery.Ray Emery dies after reportedly swimming with friends at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club around 6 a.m. As a result of the hours passing, rescue hours soon turned to recovery hours.

“They went out for a swim and unfortunately he did not emerge after diving in,” Insp. Marty Schulenberg told the Hamilton Spectator before Emery was reportedly identified. “We responded along with Hamilton Fire and EMS. Unfortunately, our efforts on the water and in the area just around the piers were met with negative results.”

Grieving Family and Friends

Ray Emery’s death resulted in many members of the NHL, both past, and present to take to Twitter to express their condolences.

Additionally, many fans of Emery are taking to Twitter to express their love for the former player. Many have gone to tweet about their memories seeing the former NHL goalie in games. In addition to their memories, others talk about how crucial Emery was to the Blackhawks in winning the cup in 2013. A lot of fans have been reminiscing about the fight that showed Emery was one of the toughest fighters out there; and how the goalie was never afraid to give or take a punch.

Ray’s NHL Career

Ray Emery played in the NHL from 2003 to 2015. He played with four different teams; five seasons in Ottawa, followed by stints with Anaheim, Chicago and Philly. In 2013, he won the William M. Jennings Trophy, as a member of the champion Blackhawks. The award goes to goalies with the fewest amount of goals in the season. Most importantly, Emery had a reputation for being a goalie who loved a good fight and didn’t shy away.
