Cincinnati Reds Prove To Be Too Much For Cubs, in 3-2 Loss

The Cubs for six games were playing incredible baseball that was hard to beat even if they didn’t have the lead. However, today was a different day and a different team. And it seemed that once again the Reds got the best of the Cubs. Jumping on Mike Montgomery for three runs early and were never able to come back and secure a lead. A six-game winning streak snapped and turned into a 3-2 loss. The Cubs will go into game two of the three-game series at 1:20 P.M central time.

Mike Montgomery Holds Down The Fort In Losing Effort

Montgomery went into today’s start with a hot hand and was looking to extend. He wasn’t as sharp as he is typically on the bump. However, he did his job well enough to keep the Cubs in the game. Going 5 IP giving up just six hits on three runs is enough to make you feel proud of your pitcher. However, when an offense can’t produce runs the pitcher duels and works in a losing effort. And it’s almost as if you let a good start getaway and you’ll never get it back. Monty was solid for the majority of his start not giving up a run until the fourth inning. Before the fourth inning, Monty had only given up two hits, in which both were singles. So, it wasn’t like they jumped on him all day, it was a one inning kind of thing where they scored using small ball.

Mike Montgomery Final Line- 5.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB and 2 SO

Offense Cuts Lead Down, But Can’t Capitalize

The Cubs were silenced for the majority of the game. Didn’t collect their first run until the fifth inning then another one in the eighth inning. The Cubs kept the game very close and entertaining towards the end of the game. And even in the ninth with two outs they nearly pulled out the comeback with a man on second and a ball that barely hooked foul. Nonetheless, the Cubs will get another crack at the Reds tomorrow and Sunday.
