What Is Happening To The Baltimore Orioles This Season?

Through discussion with and input from my friend Sam Ryan, we have made this article about how pitiful the Baltimore Orioles have been this season. Enjoy.

Okay, we need to talk about the Baltimore Orioles. They have been historically bad, and this is just two years after they made the Wild Card Game but lost to Toronto. Right now the Orioles are 24-59. That is dead last in the MLB. So just what happened?

How It All Started

This trend all started with one swing of the bat. With a 2-2 tie game in the 2016 Wild Card against the Blue Jays and with one out and a man on 1st and 3rd, you can either pitch Zach Britton, a closer with 47 saves and less than a 1.50 ERA, or Ubaldo Jimenez, a less than average starter. Buck Showalter decides to pick Jimenez. And with Edwin Encarnacion up, Ubaldo made one bad pitch, and Edwin made him pay.

The one person that I put all of the blame on for this collapse is owner Peter Angelos. After the 2017 season, I thought that Baltimore should rebuild. They could’ve traded players like Adam Jones and Chris Davis to a contending team and get young talent to bring up and develop for the future. Instead, Angelos decides he needs to fix the stadium. WHAT?!?!? Camden Yards is already a beautiful ballpark, and it doesn’t need improvement. Peter thinks that his team is a contender, and he is refusing to rebuild. Instead of using the money to either get a star in free agency or trade, he uses it to fix a ballpark that doesn’t need to be adjusted.

Chris Davis And His Historically Bad Start

Okay, now we need to mention Chris Davis. He is currently batting .155. That is to put it simply, just downright awful. Anything below the Mendoza line of .200 is terrible. Hitting that low is just unheard of pitchers bat higher than this. Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw is batting .176. He is a pitcher. If you are considered a top player on your team and pitchers are hitting better than you, you either need to be released, or your team must be downright awful. For Chris Davis, it is both. Peter, send this guy to AAA. Oh wait, you are too busy wasting money on Camden Yards. But the worst part of this is that you signed this guy to a seven-year contract. You have to stick with this garbage for four more years unless you trade him. But let’s be honest, any GM with eyes will stay away from this guy and his contract.

To be fair, this isn’t the worst start they ever had. In 1988, the Baltimore Orioles started 0-21. Enough said.

Well thanks for reading, and have an awesome day!
