The White Sox Split A Doubleheader With The Athletics

After a rainout on Thursday night, the White Sox split a doubleheader with the Athletics. A couple of roster moves were also made before the start of the first game. Leury Garcia and Avi Garcia were reinstated from the disabled list, 2B/SS Jose Rondon was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte and outfielder Trayce Thompson was designated for assignment.

Game 1

James Shields took the mound for the White Sox in game one. He ran into some trouble in the second and after an error in the second by Yoan Moncada, the Sox were already down 4-0. The White Sox would go on to lose the game 11-2 after a huge game from Franklin Barreto. He smashed 2 home runs which resulted in 6 runs batted in.

As far as the offensive production from the Sox, RBIs came from Yolmer Sanchez and Kevin Smith. Smith continued his offensive tear, going 1 for 3, setting his average at an impressive .390 after game 1. Moncada continued to struggle in game 1 with an error defensively and going 0-4 at the plate.

Game 1 was rough for the Sox as 3 defensive errors hurt the team. This coupled with the poor pitching performances out of the pen made it a rough start.

Game 2

After game 1, the White Sox rebounded. Lucas Giolito took the mound needing a strong start and he delivered. Giolito went 7 innings giving up 4 runs with 8 strikeouts. It is also important to note that Giolito only allowed 2 walks. This season he has struggled with control so cutting down on the walks is a good sign.

The bottom half of the order led the dance for the Sox. 6 RBIs were knocked by Tim Anderson, Omar Narvaez, Adam Engel and Charlie Tilson. Additionally, Anderson improved his power numbers with a solo shot in the 8th. He finished the game going 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored.

Last, the Sox sent in Joakim Soria for the 9th inning up 6 to 4. Soria locked things down and racked up a save. After the 6 to 4 win, the Sox will look to win game 3 on Saturday.
