Julen Lopetegui Presented As Real Madrid Manager

Julen Lopetegui was presented as Real Madrid manager Thursday afternoon. The official presentation comes after a dramatic series of events. Only 48 hours ago Lopetegui was on the verge of coaching his first major tournament as Spain head coach while boasting an undefeated record.

What happened?

Having agreed with Real Madrid to take up the position of manager after the World Cup, he was promptly released by La Roja. According to chief of RFEF Luis Rubiales, the reason being that Lopetegui nor Real Madrid informed the Federation of their negotiation before coming to a decision.

“I’m very upset, but hopefully we win the World Cup,” said Lopetegui as he departed the team hotel in Russia. Arriving in Madrid this afternoon, he immediately prepared for the presentation in the press room at the Bernabéu.

Lopetegui takes over as manager for a Real Madrid side who just secured their third Champions League title in a row and their fourth in the past five years. However, dominating Europe has seen them win La Liga only once in the past six seasons. Lopetegui will be expected to help stop Barcelona’s dominance locally while maintaining Real Madrid’s achievements in Europe.

Despite the unexpected manner in which this appointment took place, fans will be optimistic with their new manager. Lopetegui is one of their own after all and holds strong relationships with Real Madrid’s Spanish players, of which there are more than any other club on the national team. Lopetegui also oversaw the emergence of Casemiro during his time at Porto. He has also proven to be good at developing young players.

Some may argue the summer will be bittersweet for the new Madrid coach. Any manager would enjoy the time now at his disposal to prepare for his new post. However, its suspected he will reflect on what could have been with Spain on the world’s biggest stage.
