NHL

For the first time in their team’s history, the Washington Capitals win the Stanley Cup. The team defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3 in Game 5 at the T-Mobile Arena on Thursday.

Alex Ovechkin’s Moments

After scoring in the second period, Ovechkin tied Sidney Crosby for most goals in a single postseason in the last 20 years. Both Ovechkin and Crosby had 15 postseason goals. Ovechkin also passed John Druce for the most goals in a single postseason for the Washington Capitals. The Russian-born captain of the team finished the postseason with 27 points, 15 goals, and 12 assists. In addition to winning the Stanley Cup, he also won the Conn Smythe Award. The award goes to the player that was most valuable to his team during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Ultimately, Alex Ovechkin has

  • 1,124 games
  • 668 goals
  • 571 assists
  • 1,239 points
  • 7 Rocket Richard Trophies

Now, in addition to the hard-earned list, the Washington Capitals’ captain has a Stanley Cup.

Game Recap

After 44 seasons, the Washington Capitals are finally spending some time with the Stanley Cup. During the first period, it seemed as though it was anyone’s game, being a period without any goals. It wasn’t until the second period when Jakub Vrana scored, giving the Capitals a 1-0 lead. Minutes later Nate Schmidt evened the score, bringing the game to 1-1. Brayden McNabb then tripped Ovechkin, who proceeded to score as the previous goal was being announced. Then, Tomas Tartar redirected a shot, which was then challenged by the Capitals for goaltender interference. After a decision was made by the officials the game was tied at 2-2. Ovechkin tripped William Karlsson, giving the Knights a powerplay, which Reilly Smith scored on to make it 3-2, with the Knights leading.

In the third period, Devante Smith-Pelly scored midway through the period, tying the game 3-3. Soon after, Lars Eller put the puck into the net to give the Capitals a 4-3 lead. The game would end with the Washington Capitals winning 4-3.
