LSU Running Back Derrius Guice Selected 59th Overall By The Washington Redskins

Derrius Guice was a star running back for the LSU Tigers after playing the “Robin” to “Batman” former LSU Tiger star Leonard Fornette. Guice is the only player in SEC history to have three career games of 250 or more rushing yards. He has a rare blend of speed, power, and elusiveness and had a consistently high level of production despite below average quarterback play and a below average offensive line.

Guice got his chance to show what he could do as the lead dog this past season. He did not disappoint. Though Guice was a bit banged up with a “nagging” knee injury throughout the season he still produced on a high level. Derrius is decisive with his decision making, rarely exhibits hesitation when space is in front of him. Great vision to find space and is patient enough to follow his blocks and shows great burst at the LOS to get through the first level.

He has the body type and power to take and dish out punishment and the speed and athleticism to make the chunk and splash plays. If healthy and if given the opportunities, I can see Guice become a 1,000-yard rusher in his rookie year. His strengths are what a lot of teams’ lack overall in their current group of rushers.

Guice’s decisive running style is an encouraging sign for both his vision and how he’ll translate to lining up behind the quarterback after running almost exclusively out of the shotgun in college. Instead of attempting to stretch outside runs to the perimeter when nothing is there, Guice plants his foot in the ground and gets upfield, consistently turning no gains into three or four-yard gains.

Welcome to the NFL and Washington, Derrius!
